This building was erected in 1898 by Charles and Frank Kutz. The second and third floors contained a hosiery mill called the Clover Leaf Knitting Mill and on the first floor they had a general store. The brothers sold stock in the store part of the building to David Brown and Charles Kieffer. The store was known as Brown & Kieffer. When David Brown died, Clayton Mertz became Kieffer's partner. The store became Kieffer & Mertz. When the building was sold to the First National Bank in 1919, they were forced to move across the street (NE corner of Main and Franklin). After Kieffer died, the company became Mertz & Kalbach.
